WIPO to Discuss Past, Present, and Future of Digital Copyright at Music Biz 2012

April 16, 2012 – Music business association NARM and digitalmusic.org, the virtual home of NARM’s digital initiatives, will host the World Intellectual Property Organization’s (WIPO) “Roundtable on the International Music Registry (IMR) and Copyright Infrastructure in the Digital Environment: Current Trends and Prospects for Evolution.” The event will be held Tuesday, May 8, at 1:30 p.m. at the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza Hotel in Los Angeles. It is the first IMR event in North America and is expected to gather recording and publishing companies, performers and writers, collection societies, music users, digital music services, telecoms, lawyers, academics, policy makers, and more from North America and around the world. Tickets for the roundtable only are available now for $25, and the event is also open, at no extra charge, to those who register for the full Music Biz 2012.

The Music Biz agenda also includes INgrooves Fontana CEO Robb McDaniels’ live “This Week in Music” keynote hosted by Topspin’s Ian Rogers, a metrics-focused “What Gets Measured Gets Managed” Town Hall, and the Awards Dinner Party finale featuring the presentation of the Artist of the Year Award to global superstar Katy Perry and the Chairman’s Award for Sustained Creative Achievement to the legendary Lionel Richie.

“As digital music continues to expand into new areas that did not exist when the DMCA (Digital Millennium Copyright Act) was passed, there is now more uncertainty than ever about what exactly copyright means on the internet,” said Bill Wilson, Vice President of Strategy and Business Development at NARM and digitalmusic.org. “WIPO has always done an outstanding job illuminating copyright law as it stands now while keeping one eye toward where it will be heading next. We expect our attendees will leave this event empowered to tackle the challenges ahead.”
