SESAC Celebrates Songwriters & Publishers at the 2012 Nashville Music Awards

Sony ATV / EMI Foray Named Publisher of the Year

(Nashville, TN): SESAC honored the songwriters and music publishers behind the year’s most-performed Country & Americana songs at the organization’s Nashville Music Awards held on Sunday, October 28, at the Pinnacle at Symphony Place.

Catt Gravitt won the coveted Songwriter of the Year award for her massive hits “Alone With You” recorded by Jake Owen, “Why Ya Wanna” recorded by Jana Kramer and “Amen” as recorded by Edens Edge.
Song of the Year honors went to “A Woman Like You” written by Jon Stone and published by Adios Pantalones & Hears That Skyline Music.

Sony ATV / EMI Foray Music was crowned Publisher of the Year at the event.

The Avett Brothers received SESAC’s Summit Award in recognition of their unprecedented rise from small club performers to major headline act.  The band was recognized for their rapid ascension in the live performance world selling out major venues across the country as well as their peerless musicianship.  Seth Avett, the band’s lead singer and one of the founding members with brother Scott and Bob Crawford, was on hand to accept the award and perform a evocative version of their “Ballad Of Love & Hate.”

An all-star tribute to the 30th anniversary of the Bluebird Café was a show-stopping part of the evening festivities.  A replica of the famous nightclub was the setting for an ‘in-the-round’ performance by such renowned writers as Gary Burr (“That’s My Job”), Don Henry (“Where’ve You Been”), Victoria Shaw (“The River”) and Kim Williams (“Ain’t Goin’ Down ‘Til The Sun Comes Up”), all of whom performed at the Bluebird early in their careers. “Nashville” actors Charles Esten, Jonathan Jackson and Sam Palladio made an appearance at the event to help honor the famous nightclub.

The awards event boasted a stellar performance by songwriter/producer Monty Powell who performed his honored song, “For You,” a song recorded by his co-writing partner, Keith Urban.  Powell was joined on stage by Mike Vaughn, who served over 20 years in the Special Operations Forces.  Vaughn, now retired, is on the Board of Advisors for the Special Operations Warrior Foundation (SOWF) that that provides college scholarships to all children of fallen Special Operations Forces.  After presenting Powell a performance award for “For You,” Tim Fink, SESAC’s Vice President, Writer/Publisher Relations and the event’s host, announced the PRO would be making a donation to the Special Operations Warrior Foundation in Vaughn’s honor.

Other highlights of the evening included a soulful performance by country’s hottest duo, Thompson Square on their new single “If I Didn’t Have You” a moving version of “A Woman Like You” by Lee Brice.
The elegant, black-tie soiree honored the writers and publishers behind the year’s biggest hits with awards being presented to the elite group of creative talent drawing over 400 songwriters, publishers and industry professionals. The star-studded attendees included Thompson Square, Hillary Scott, Lee Brice, Jerrod Niemann, Jana Kramer, Seth Avett and "Nashville” actors Charles Esten Jonathan Jackson & Sam Palladio.
